Classification of large displacement motorbikes (Part 2)

Skip to main content in article (See)

There are many classification systems for motorcycles, but there are six main types that are widely recognized, including: Cruiser, sport, touring, standard, dual-purpose and dirt bike. There are also a number of other types divided into smaller groups.

In part 1, we presented to you some types of motorcycles in the Street Bike group, including Naked-bike, Sport-bike, and Touring-bike. In the Street group, there are three more popular types: Cruiser, Dual-sport and Scooters.

4. Cuiser

Cruiser is a car line that originated in the US and appeared quite early, said to have appeared since the 1930s, with famous brands such as Harley-Davidson, Indian and Excelsior-Henderson. Of these three companies, the most famous is still Harley-Davidson. Also correct Harley is the company that shaped the cruiser car line, with unique characteristics that are not confused with other types of vehicles such as using a V-twin engine with large cylinder capacity, low engine rpm, low operation to bring ease and comfort while driving and another important point is to help the driver maintain a stable speed. The V-twin engine block is also the inspiration for many other car models such as Chopper, Bobber, Samurai…

V-Twin engine block is typical of the Cruiser-bike line.

One of the more noticeable features of the Cruiser motorcycle line is that the body is designed with a low center of gravity, so the rider tends to sit upright, or slightly backwards. The car’s footrest is often pushed forward, helping the driver have a comfortable and imposing sitting posture. Because of this sitting position, Cruiser cars are quite suitable for middle-aged people.

The handlebars of the Cruiser line are quite comfortable, helping the driver to travel long distances like the Touring-bike line. The speed of the Cruiser car is not too fast although the acceleration is quite good.

In terms of performance, the Cruiser works quite well on straight and rough roads thanks to its comfortable seats. Cruiser-bike is also very flexible when traveling on roads with many curves because the front wheel is small and has good steering ability.

The biggest disadvantage of the Cruiser-bike is that it is quite heavy compared to other models, of course not as heavy as the Touring line.

In terms of hierarchy, the Cruiser-bike line is also divided into classes, from the extreme to the extreme Suzuki GN125to mid-range like Honda Steed, Shadow… and heavy-duty like Honda VTX1800, Harley Davidson or Triump 2300cc, Harley-Davidson Night-Rod, Kawasaki Vulcan 2000, etc…

Chopper: Chopper is a small segment of the Cruiser line. Chopper cars often have a very strong shape and imbue the player’s personality, because they are often the result of editing and cutting or “modifying” the original Cruiser model according to the player’s wishes. However, Chopper cars focus mainly on external beauty, so the internal machinery does not receive too much attention from players.

5. Dual-sportDual-sport, sometimes also called Dual-purpose, is often used for both on-road and off-road driving. Meaning, the car is designed to run well on paved roads, as well as be able to overcome rough roads and many obstacles. Many people think that Dual-sport should be classified in the Off-road group, but we think that this line should still be classified in the Street group, because its main scope of operation is still paved roads.

The Dual series has a higher center of gravity than other Street models, with higher seats and footpegs. In addition, the car is also equipped with excellent front and rear shock absorbers to be able to run on difficult terrain.

Normally, Dual-sport vehicles are often used for adventure tours on paved roads and over difficult terrain in the city. Because it is a hybrid between an off-road vehicle and a Street-bike, in terms of performance in the city, the Dual-sport is not as effective as other Street-bikes due to its high center of gravity and large tires, so its speed is limited on straight roads. Dual-sport also does not work well when going off-road with a specialized off-road vehicle.

However, Dual-sport cars are still quite popular with many people because of their mobility and can be used for driving in the city and long distances. Not to mention, the car has light weight, good durability, relatively low cost and a sporty physique suitable for young people.
