As we know, musical instruments have been indispensable tools in creating music since ancient times. Musical instruments in general and the harmonica in particular always play an important role in the spiritual and entertainment life of most people from all walks of life, especially young people today. What is a harmonica?
Maybe you don’t know, the harmonica is also known by the lovely name Mouth Organ or Harp. The harmonica is a musical instrument used mainly by the breath of the individual blowing it in many music genres, especially in Blue, POP, Folk, Country, Jazz and Rock n Roll music. Many people humorously compare the Harmonica to a pocket piano with a sound that captivates people.
Through time of renovation and transformation, three main types of Harmonica that are commonly used have now appeared: Diatonic Harmonica, Tremolo Harmonica and Chromatic Harmonica. There are also more variations and expansions such as: Mini Harmonica, Soprano, Chord, Bass, Altor… Depending on each person’s preferences, we can choose the model and type of trumpet that best suits us.
Since I have a little knowledge about this type of trumpet, next I will create some preliminary structures that every harmonica must have such as: Comb (trunk body, horn comb), Reed plate (horn gut), and cover plate (2 top covers on the top and bottom sides of the trumpet).
Most types of harmonicas have the same general structure
The first thing we can mention is Comb. The comb of the harmonica is the body of the harmonica and the comb. The role of the Comb in the Harmonica is the frame connecting the two reed plates above and below. The role of the Comb is as a vapor blocking and airtight system, where a number of fixed positions located in the Comb and reed plates are linked together with screws or rivets to ensure a solid connection of the two parts. The quality of Comb is also very diverse such as plastic, glass, or wood. There are a number of high-end Chromatic trumpets from Hohner that can be made of gold or Titanium.
The second part is Reedplate. The harmonica’s reedplate is the gut part of the harmonica, an important detail of the trumpet. The Reedplate is a rectangular piece of metal that usually contains reeds (metal foil) that act as sound-producing parts. The metal leaves will be pre-aligned according to a different short ratio (long leaves will have a low sound and leaves that create high sound will be short leaves). Reed plates can be made from many types of metal pieces such as Copper, Steel, Chromium… of which most are made from copper because of its good elasticity and can also be mixed with phosphorus to increase the durability of the instrument.

The third thing to mention that has an equally important use is Cover plates. Cover plates in the Harmonica are the cover of the trumpet designed in a pair of 2 covers at the top and bottom ends of the trumpet, respectively, protecting the reed plates. The cover part is the part that directly affects the user’s experience when it is the component that comes into direct contact with the lips and mouth of the person blowing. Good metals will minimize friction when the blower holds and moves.
In addition to the main parts, there are also some other parts such as: Windsavers, Mouthpiece, sound changer, silencer or Mutes, or Rack or holder.
How to choose the right harmonica
Currently there are too many options for you in finding a suitable harmonica. As I said above, there are many types, so depending on that, the price of each type is also different.
