Teaching myself to play guitar was an interesting experience for me, even though there were times when I got discouraged and wanted to stop. My own efforts and diligent daily practice have taught me patience and high discipline.
One cold winter evening, I wandered the small streets of Hanoi. Suddenly, passing by a pretty little cafe, I heard someone playing a guitar, the sound was very clear, gentle and attractive. I stopped and walked into the restaurant, a warm, simple space. In a small corner, I saw a group of friends passionately listening to “Safe and sound” performed by a girl with a very rustic guitar. Ordering a hot cup of coffee, I sat down to enjoy the music and vaguely imagined “what I would be like if I knew how to play the guitar?” And I started Self-study guitar right from the winter of that year.

Having found a suitable guitar after many days of hard consultation and advice, I started Self-study guitar in the most suitable way. This is truly a completely new world, even though before that I often sang backing vocals for a few guitar playing groups. I don’t want to sign up for any professional piano class but want to explore the world of music in my own way. I learned “introductory” knowledge on YouTube, drew musical notes and stuck them on the neck of the guitar, and I just strummed randomly, not following any method. I practice running notes, from chord to string, practicing dividing the fingers so that the strings are even, like the 3 bass strings – the thumb is in charge, the 3 treb strings are the index, middle, and ring fingers.
Many times when I sing, I ask my friends to teach me. The first song I was able to play completely was Romance (a beginner lesson that everyone knows). Thanks to practicing this song carefully, when I go to the accompaniment to sing, the difficult chords like F major are nothing, my problem is to practice the hand movements to make them smooth.
When I first started practicing, I was very frustrated because practicing hurt my hands and took a lot of time. There were times when I couldn’t even touch the piano for a whole week. Then, because I was fascinated and loved it, I continued practicing. Once you have the basics, self-practice becomes easier and easier. I realized that the more impatient I try to practice quickly, the slower and faster I will get bored. I should only practice slow but steady notes, don’t rush too much, and I will see results faster.
