What effect does the Magnesium bar in the water heater have?

Skip to main content in article (See)

We often hear that water heaters contain magnesium bars to purify water, but we do not fully understand the working mechanism of this type of component in each water heater.

Main function of Magnesium bar

Magnesium bar is a very important component in water heater enamel. In principle, enameling cannot completely cover the steel surface of the water heater core. Looking with the naked eye, we can see that the enamel is covered relatively tightly, however, there are always very small air holes on the enamel surface, H2 gas molecules will escape from the steel during the firing process at a temperature of 800 – 850 degrees Celsius.

The Magnesium bar installed in the water heater has the function of protecting open points and points that are not covered by enamel in the enameled water heater, preventing the rust process at the open points in the enameled water heater from taking place. Therefore, the magnesium bar helps protect the tank core from being punctured. When in use, these exposed points come into direct contact with water, and in such a high temperature environment, the unglazed points will quickly rust and corrode, leading to a broken core, causing a fire that is dangerous to the user’s life.

It can be briefly understood that the manufacturer temporarily puts a chemical into the water heater (Mg) that can participate in a chemical reaction with some impurities in the water to prevent residue on the heating rod and cause chemical corrosion at the welds.

How long do magnesium bars last?

It can be said that the Magnesium bar is a “substitute”, worn out during use. If the water source is not good, you should change the Magnesium bar once a year. If the water source is good, you should change the Magnesium bar once every two years.

Magnesium bars are used as a chemical agent to neutralize water, destroy chemical compounds in water or produced during heating. Therefore, corrosion of the tank is avoided. Magnesium bars will be consumed during use. The regular renewal period for Magnesium bars is usually 2 years. But in Vietnam’s source conditions, with our experience, it should be replaced early because due to hard water conditions, the Magnesium bar wears out faster than recommended by the manufacturer.

When replacing the Magnesium bar, you should combine it with rinsing the tank and cleaning residue on the burning bar. The more exposed the enameled surface of the water heater core is, the faster the magnesium bar will dissolve. When the Magnesium bar dissolves, your water heater is not protected and needs to be replaced with another Magnesium bar.

Magnesium bars should be replaced within 1-2 years of use to get the best water use

Things to note when choosing magnesium bars

The quality of Magnesium bars has a direct impact on the protection of enameled water heaters due to the special properties and functions mentioned above. If the Magnesium bar contains too many impurities or other metals, its effectiveness in protecting the water heater will also be significantly reduced. When maintaining the water heater, you should replace the Magnesium bar to ensure safety for the tank as well as the user. When replacing the Magnesium bar, users should combine it with rinsing the tank and cleaning residue on the burning bar to ensure the tank has a longer life.
