What means of transport should I use to travel to Sapa?

Sapa is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the North, especially in the winter months, it snows, so if you like to feel the cold cutting through your skin, like to see the white snowflakes with your own eyes, you should not miss a trip to Sapa.

Sa Pa town is located 38km from Lao Cai city and about 380km from Hanoi. To get to Sapa you can go by motorbike, car, or train.

Method 1: Travel to Sapa from Hanoi by bus

The advantage of traveling by this means of transport is that it is very convenient to catch a bus because every bus company has many trips, you can buy a ticket whenever you want to go. The sleeper bus goes straight to Sapa town without stopping at any station. The ticket price is not too expensive, from 230,000 – 280,000 VND/ticket/way. However, the disadvantage of traveling to Sapa by car is that if you get carsick, you will not be able to endure the 8-9 hours of travel, the road is also steep and bumpy, so you have to be very strong to not get carsick.

Method 2: Travel to Sapa by train

Traveling to Sapa by train is the most popular way because the ticket price is not too different, from 250,000 VND to 650,000 VND, depending on the seat compartment you choose (soft seats, air-conditioned beds, hard seats…) and also depending on the type of train you take (fast trains, slow trains, cargo trains…)

The advantages of traveling by train are affordable prices, no motion sickness, safer. However, the disadvantages are that you have to buy tickets in advance if you go during the tourist season, and it takes longer to get to Sapa. The train only stops at Lao Cai station, so from Lao Cai station you have to take a bus to Sapa town, about 30 km away (the bus fare is about 60,000 VND). If you want to find a cheaper means of transport, take the bus, which only costs about 10,000 VND. If you want to be more luxurious, hire a taxi, which costs about 350,000 VND (divided for about 4-5 people, it costs about 70-80,000 VND, not much more expensive but faster and more convenient).

In addition, buying tickets from Hanoi to Lao Cai is easy but from Lao Cai to Hanoi is a bit difficult so you need to pay attention.

Method 3: Rent a tourist car for a large group

Traveling to Sapa by tourist car is also a popular way of traveling. This method is for those who travel in large groups, about 12 – 16 people, or more. The advantage is that the car will take you to the places you want. Car rental fees vary depending on the size of the car and the duration of the trip. For example, a 3-day trip to Sapa costs about 6,000,000 VND to rent a 12 – 16 seat car, which is generally cheaper than traveling by bus.

However, before renting a tourist car, you need to consult the prices, negotiate the price to see which party has to pay the extra fees, what the itinerary includes, where to pick up and where to drop off.

Method 4: Travel by motorbike

This is the most economical but also the most dangerous way. If you go backpacking, you need to plan your itinerary carefully, maintain your vehicle thoroughly and find an experienced backpacking leader because 380km is not a short distance. In addition, because you are traveling by motorbike, you also need to prepare personal items, gloves, shoes, towels, clothes, protective gear, etc. to be safer when traveling.
