Sapa is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the North, especially in the winter months, it also has snow, so if you like to feel the biting cold, you’d like to see it with your own eyes. When you see the white snowflakes, you should not miss your trip to Sapa.
Sa Pa town is located 38km from Lao Cai city and about 380km from Hanoi. To get to Sapa you can go by motorbike, car, or train.
Method 1: Travel to Sapa from Hanoi by passenger car
The advantage of traveling by this means is that it is very convenient to catch a bus because every bus company has many trips, so you can buy a ticket whenever you want. The sleeper bus goes straight to Sapa town without stopping at any station. Bus ticket prices are not too expensive, from 230,000 – 280,000 VND/ticket/way. However, the downside of traveling to Sapa by car is that if you get car sick, you will not be able to endure 8-9 hours of travel. The road is also very steep and bumpy, so you have to be very strong to not get sick.

The advantage of traveling by train is that it is affordable, does not cause motion sickness, and is safer. However, the downside is that you have to buy tickets in advance if going on a tourist occasion, and the time to arrive in Sapa is also longer. The train only stops at Lao Cai station, so from Lao Cai station you have to catch a bus to Sapa town, about 30 km away (bus price is about 60,000 VND). If you want to find a cheaper means of transportation, take the bus, it only costs about 10,000 VND. If it’s more luxurious, rent a taxi, about 350,000 VND (divided into about 4 – 5 people, about 70 – 80,000, not much more expensive but faster and more convenient).
In addition, buying tickets from Hanoi to Lao Cai is easy but from Lao Cai to Hanoi is a bit difficult so you need to pay attention.
Method 3: Rent a car for a large group of people
Traveling to Sapa by tourist car is also a way of transportation chosen by many people. This method is for those who travel in large groups, about 12 – 16 people, or more. The advantage is that the car will take you to the places you want. Car rental fees vary widely, depending on car size and travel time. For example, for a 3-day trip to Sapa, the cost of renting a 12-16-seat car is about 6,000,000 VND, which is generally cheaper than taking a passenger car.
However, before renting a tourist car, you need to consult the prices, negotiate the price to see who has to pay the surcharge, what the schedule includes, where to pick up passengers, and where to drop off passengers.
Method 4: Travel by motorbike
This is the most economical way but also the most dangerous. If you go backpacking, you need to plan carefully, maintain your vehicle carefully as well as find a leader with backpacking experience because 380km is not short. In addition, because traveling by motorbike, you also need to prepare personal items, gloves, shoes, towels, clothes, protective clothing… to be safer when traveling.
