A school bag is one of the indispensable items when a child goes to school. However, choosing the right school bag for children so as not to affect their health is always a concern of most parents. Please read the following article.
Today’s students, especially elementary school students, tend to wear school bags that are too heavy for their weight and body size. To avoid these situations, parents should note the following:
What should you pay attention to when choosing to buy a school bag?
Use a backpack or double-shoulder bag instead of a cross-shoulder bag: Parents should choose briefcases or backpacks with two straps instead of cross-shoulder bags for their children. Because a bag worn on both shoulders will help distribute the weight equally on both shoulders, while wearing it cross-shoulder will shift the entire weight of the bag to one side of the body, easily causing scoliosis.

Choose a pair with a padded back: Using a pair with soft padding on the back will help reduce friction on the child’s back, limiting injury and back pain when wearing it.
Large and soft strap: You should choose a pair with 2 large and soft straps (padded with cotton or soft foam), at least 5cm wide. Wide straps will help distribute weight over a larger area of the body. On the contrary, a strap that is too thin or narrow will tighten on the shoulder, affecting blood circulation. This condition can cause numbness and weakness in the hands.
Light and durable material: Durable material for long-term use, less damage. At the same time, the material must be light to reduce the inherent weight of the briefcase.
The pair is divided into several compartments: You should choose a briefcase with many compartments or divide it yourself to put different items in separate compartments. This will limit the movement of things in the bag when your baby walks. Because when the furniture in the bag moves, it also increases the pressure on the child’s shoulders, requiring the body to constantly change its center of gravity.
Do not choose large pairs: Carrying a large briefcase or backpack can strain your back muscles. In addition, when wearing a large briefcase, we often have the mentality of adding more things even though it is not really necessary, which unintentionally increases the bag’s weight significantly. Parents should choose an appropriate backpack for their children, meaning that the backpack should be narrower and shorter than the width and length of the wearer’s back.
Note when using a pair with wheels: Wheeled briefcases are usually heavier than normal briefcases due to the rigid frame that supports them. A wheeled briefcase is only useful when traveling on steep roads or traveling by elevator. So if it’s not really necessary, you should choose regular school bags for your child. If you choose a pair with wheels, you should choose one with a long enough handle, pull the pair in a straight position, facing forward.
What to note when using school bags for students:
Wear on both shoulders: wearing a bag on one side will cause the weight of the bag to be distributed unevenly to the body, which in the long run can cause scoliosis of the spine. Therefore, parents should advise children to wear two straps on both shoulders, not to wear one shoulder off-center, and the straps should be tightened.
The total weight of the briefcase and the items inside must not exceed 15% – 20% of body weight. Children should only wear a backpack that weighs about 10 to 15% of their weight. For example, a child weighing 30kg should only wear a backpack weighing about 3 – 4.5kg.
The heaviest items should be stored in the middle of the bag and worn in the middle of the child’s back to avoid the weight of the bag being unevenly distributed, being too heavy or too light on one side.
Do not wear briefcases or backpacks all day long.
When children wear schoolbags or backpacks, parents need to pay attention to see if the schoolbag is suitable for the child. If it is not suitable, you will see some signs such as: when taking off the schoolbag, the child will feel itchy or numb arms, backache, etc. Shoulders become red, body posture worsens when wearing, chin or neck leans forward… Hope parents will choose the right product for their children.
